Hi, I’m John. My wife and I moved to Spain a couple of years ago so that we could start our family there. Living abroad has been an incredible experience for us as it is constantly forcing us out of our comfort zones. A lot of people have asked me how we learned Spanish without taking any classes or hiring a tutor, but the truth is that it was really easy! The first few months were tough because Javier didn’t speak English at all when he met Maria and they had no idea what each other said most days! So now after two years here they both know enough English to communicate with me (though not fluently) while also speaking comfortably in Spanish to each other!
I’m going to share with you the three strategies we used that helped us learn Spanish quickly so that hopefully you can do it too! The first tip is to get a phrasebook. There are tons of different ones out there, but they all have one thing in common: they come loaded with phrases and translations written specifically for travelers like yourself who want to learn how to say things in another language without having any background knowledge in grammar or syntax! This makes figuring out what someone might be trying to tell you really easy . I’ve never had an issue not knowing what my wife was saying because she always has her phrase book handy when we’re on vacation together 🙂
The second strategy is related to the first one. When Maria would ask me what a word in English meant, I would just give her the translation! It was way easier than trying to think of how to say “What does ‘library’ mean?”

This strategy is also a favorite of mine and it’s what I do with my wife when we’re on vacation. Whenever she would ask me the meaning of an English word, instead of trying to think about how to say “What does ‘library’ mean?” in French, I just gave her the translation! It was much easier than that for both of us.
