“What do the numbers mean, Mason?”

“The numbers next to a keyword are its search engine ranking. The higher the number is, the more popular it is.”

“I don’t get it. Why does that matter?” “It matters because if you’re trying to rank for something and your competitor has the same thing but they have a higher ranking than you, then people will usually pick their website over yours.”

The numbers next to a keyword are its search engine ranking. The higher the number is, the more popular it is. I don’t get it. Why does that matter? It matters because if you’re trying to rank for something and your competitor has the same thing but they have a higher ranking than you, then people will usually pick their website over yours.

I’m going to show you what this looks like with two examples: “healthy cooking recipes” vs “slow cooker beef stew.” Healthy cooking recipes ranks at 138 while slow cooker beef stew ranks at 123 on Google’s page rankings system (as of March 13th 2018). Now, since we know how important google page rankings are in terms of which website people end up going to, it’s clear that we’re not going to want our healthy cooking recipes blog post at 138.

This is what I mean when I talk about how search engine ranking matters in comparison with the competition – and why it’s important for you to monitor your ranking so you know where you stand against other sites. The higher up on page one of Google’ results your site ranks, the more traffic (and therefore business) will come from those searches.

“That’s understandable,” I told him. It can be overwhelming if you don’t have any background in SEO or website analytics and it does take some time getting used to looking at the data.

“Mason, so your site ranks 138th on page one of Google for ‘what do the numbers mean mason’?” I asked nonchalantly as he nodded his head up and down furiously.”

In my opinion, a ranking that high is an achievement – but there are many other factors we should consider before celebrating this accomplishment: *Insert an infographic about how search engine rankings work.* For starters, when Mason runs a google search with his keywords what do the numbers mean mason, he notices that the top result is his own website. “Wait,” I said to him as Mason’s head started sinking towards the table in what seemed like defeat.”This is a good thing!”

I told Mason not to let this achievement go to his head and explained how important maintaining these rankings will be for future growth of his business – but it was hard convincing him of anything when all there were on the screen were numbers.
