The but you didn’t do anything meme is one that has been popular for a few years now. It’s a picture of some kid with the quote “but you didn’t do anything” and it usually accompanies pictures of other people acting out in various ways, as if to say “you’re not mad at them, so why are you mad at me?” I’ve always thought this was an interesting way to look at things. Recently though, something happened that made me rethink my stance on this issue: I saw 12 photos of my college-aged daughter doing nothing.

I think it’s really important to teach kids that they can’t just act out without consequences. I know in my own day, as a kid with divorced parents who had never been given any type of real guidance on how to deal with anger or disappointment (let alone divorce), if someone was mad at me for something and said “but you’re not doing anything” I would automatically get defensive–and then lash out. We need more understanding and empathy when dealing with young people today, because whatever we say will stick in their minds forever.

ive lessons about responsibility ?” But what are these supposed responsibilities? Sexually active teenagers still have a right to an education! Teens who drink alcohol should be aware that there is no such thing as a safe amount for them to consume on the way home from school before driving themselves anywhere! Kids need guidance and love, not condemnation for their mistakes.
