A tie dye top is a great way to add some unique appeal to your outfit. Tie dye shirts can be worn with jeans, shorts or skirts for any occasion- from the beach to a party. Best of all, you won’t need much more than an old shirt and some rubber bands! Here’s how you do it:
Cut off the sleeves on your t-shirt so that they’re only about two inches long (or fold them up). Take each sleeve in one hand and use a rubber band around both ends of each sleeve – this will make sure everything stays together as we tie it onto itself later on. Then take the bottom half of the shirt in one hand also using another rubber band just below where your wrists are placed.
Now tie a tight knot in the shirt, just below your wrists. Now take one sleeve and then cross it over the other so that they are now both on opposite sides of the top part of your knotted shirt (this should be at about waist-level). Use yet another rubber band to hold each sleeve in place while you tie them together tightly. Do this with all four sleeves – two on one side and two on the other – until there’s only one loose end left! Finally, wrap up any remaining slack by tying it securely around where you’ve tied everything else together. Make sure not to tighten too much or cut off circulation though! You can also do a little bit more work here if desired: make knots using some of the spare fabric and rubber bands, or tie on some other decorations to really make it your own!
The next step is to take one of the two loose ends from each sleeve in turn. Take a rubber band and slip it around both sleeves at about elbow height, so that they are now crossed over one another again. Tuck these under where you just tied them together with all four sleeves (the lower part) – this will keep them out of your way while we do the same for the tops. Now cross one sleeve over the other as before, but this time only wrap up its corresponding side’s slack instead. If you’re doing something fancier here too then go ahead: knot some extra bits of fabric around the sleeve to make it your own, tie on some of the extra decorations – whatever you like! You can swap them all around and try different patterns.
